Adam Nicolson's book Restoration, about the rebuilding of Winsdor Castle after the 1992 fire, is simply amazing. In a very clear text he tells the story of how the fire devestated the castle and then the immense job of planning and undertaking the restoration.

Knowing that the world would be watching, those in charge knew they could not fail at the task. Nicolson shows how a myriad of firms, government organisations, the Royal Household, and, of course, The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, worked together to complete the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

The book is beautifully illustrated with many pictures and diagrams of the castle that add immeasurably to the story.

Yet, for as good a job as Mr Nicolson has done with the book, nothing can even approach acutally seeing the restored state rooms in person. Having been there just this past July (1998), one could still smell the aroma of the wood that now covers the walls and makes up the timber frame ceiling of St. George's Hall.

If you have an interest in historical restoration, or are just the history of the world's oldest occupied castle, this book is certainly worth the price.
